Blog Post: Won't You Be My Neighbor? The H'aim Conflict

Just south of Iyves is the kingdom of Lomumbria. It consists of sixteen territories under one crown, spans over twice the size of Iyves and includes a string of islands off of its coast. At the time of Ynav's birth, it did not exist.

Lomumbria is a region formerly known as The Fell South, a mountainous terrain inhabited by over three hundred separate nomadic tribes sharing a common language and ancestry. The concept of a single Lomumbric people was the invention of Lieg Trauliq, an advisor to the Nuni throne who was sent as a royal envoy to "investigate the cause or causes of the longevity experienced by the peoples of the fell south". The result of this mission was the birth of modern medicine.

Trauliq's findings opened the floodgates to other expeditions from Nunir, Calabria and Khodar. Tribal leaders forged alliances to promote the free exchange of knowledge. Factions formed along ideological lines (some tribal leaders refusing to work alongside any who would teach Nunis and Khodes, who were not practitioners of the dominant religion). Many tribes were becoming less and less itinerant. The question of permanent settlement arose for those tribes, naturally leading to a question of who owned the land. A series of wars broke out that took place over 36 summers and 1 autumn. In the end, a Lomumbrian state was formed.

The H'aim Conflict was the last war of the Lomumbrian Unification, and it determined just who would rule the fledgling polity. The war was waged between Iyves and Nunir backed by the support of various Lomumbric tribes over the course of 8 years (between the Year of the Krait and the Year of the Vulture), ending 28 autumns from the start of the story. Of the characters that we have met thus far, Maran Sholde and his second to eldest son Nadda are veterans (Nadda having entered towards the end of the war at the ripe old age of 16 summers). Iyves had only played a small role in the unification up until this point, deciding that it was in the best interest of the realm to stay out of the Lomumbric wars. Iyves became uneasy with the growing influence of Nunir along their southern borders, aware that if the chieftain backed by the Nuni government took the throne of Lomumbria, he would be a puppet monarch to a foreign crown-- And given its tumultuous history with Nunir, Iyves could not allow such a force to crouch at its doorstep. Iyves won H'aim, placing King Axith Shoh on the throne of Lomumbria.
